I have been duck hunting Johnson and Garden lakes(more Johnson, because of the privacy) for the last 25 years. In the years when hunters complained of the lower number of ducks, I just smiled. We have always had an abundance of Mallards, Wood ducks, and the northern Blue Bills have been outstanding. Both lakes have an abundance of rice, and the weed roots that the Blue Bills love. The point off the northwest corner of Johnson is always good with the prevailing wind from the N.N.W.. The peninsula on our land that runs between Johnson and Garden lakes has spawned many hours of "pass Shooting" as the larger number of hunters on Garden Lake get the ducks up and they fly over to Johnson (all you need is a good lawn chair and a box or two of shells). We also own the N.W. corner (the best corner for ducks) of Garden lake and could easily have built a pallet walkway out to a perminent blind, but the hunting on Johnson was too good to make it seem necesary to do so. You will rarely see another hunter on Johnson, partly because we own 3/4ths of the lake, and partly because the only other landing is inaccessible. I have had as many as 5 groups of hunters on Johnson(all in my party), with plenty of space for blinds and deeks. If you want to see ducks, just go out to the shore line on Johnson in mid to late October and fire a nine milimeter pistol over the water, and you will see, literally, hundreds and hundreds of ducks get up.
Deer hunting hunting has been much the same. I'll try to get you a picture of the 12 pointer that is now hanging on the wall in Montana. The habitat for deer is as good as you can get. Corn fields to the east, west and south, bedding grounds over the entire property, and we own the water. The day I shot the 12 pointer (opener), I let two ten pointers go by (moving too fast for me), and one was shot by my friend Dave from Tennessee, and the 12 pointer came in about 8:00. The trick to hunting this property is to be patient, and don't shoot the 4,6,and 8 pointers, or all the big does, wait for the bigger 10s and 12s. I doesn't seem to make any difference if you hunt the north side or the south side. The North side has less brush in parts, and more grass, but the cover on the South side is nice too. If you want me to give a grand tour let me know. Jim
